Ice Fishing

It was a wonderful President's day weekend. Wonderful because we didn't have school! That's always nice-although this next week is going to be rough, I wanted to put it off as long a possible! My home teacher yesterday asked if I wanted to go ice fishing today. I was excited because I had never been ice fishing before, so I was definitely in! So me and a few other guys from the ward woke up early this morning (and by early I mean 5:00am!) and went down to Lake Yuba, just south of Nephi. Just a side note-Lake Yuba gets its name from the settlers who dammed the reservoir to create it. They didn't get any help from the government, and they really needed the dam, so they had a saying, "yube dammed if you do, yube dammed if you don't!" Thus the name Lake Yuba!

Anywho, we drove down there and went out on the ice. Now, we were a little skeptical at first, seeing how the ice was pretty thin near the shore, but as soon as we saw four wheelers doing donuts on the lake, we knew we would be okay. There were already cut out holes in the ice from previous fishers, so we took advantage of those. They were frozen over, but easier to break through than the thick ice. We tried a few spots, but the bites weren't coming! At one point I thought I had a bite, but it turns out I hooked the ice and was pulling reletlessly at it! It was pretty funny and the most excitement we had up to that point!

We moved around the lake a bit, "cutting" out holes, but with no luck. There were two older gentlemen fishing like 70 feet from us and they were catching everything! They did have a fish detecting device, so of course they had the upper hand. If we had one of those, we would have been eating fish for months!

Just as we were about to leave and find a new spot, Jeff had bite! He reeled it in easily (so he claims). It was a nice big perch! Biggest fish we caught all day! (the only one we caught)

So the trip wasn't a total waste. In fact it was a lot of fun. The only scary thing was that as the sun started coming out, we could all hear the ice cracking. My home teacher, Sage, said it was normal, but it made me jump every time! Although we only caught one fish all day, it was a great experience. Next time I will catch one!

Sounds fun! Remember the time Tyler fell through the abandoned ice fishing hole? I think it was at Deer Creek, but I could be wrong.

Did you take the dam quiz? Oh, that's at the Lake Powell dam. Chelsea knows about that. Thank her for the cute Valentine-it's on our fridge.
You are brave for going ice fishing. What did Chels think?:)

That's awesome. I've never been ice fishing before either. I have been to Lake Yuba, but I had no idea how it got its name.
